About the episode:

Our attitude can change how we see ourselves. It allows us to view our life through a lens of self-pity or responsibility. How we change our mindset comes down to one thing: faith. To overcome circumstances and heal from hardships, we must understand how to take ownership through our faith to live a life of freedom. In this episode, we compare two Bible stories on healing that give us insight into how we come to Jesus to receive deliverance in our life. And we discuss how to let go of our hurts and seek God in our journey toward restoration.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

  • A biblical study comparing the difference between self-pity and responsibility
  • How to let go of hurts that are holding us back
  • What God has for us through faith
  • Why we shouldn’t hesitate when we ask God for help

Welcome to the Jamie Luce podcast. Thank you so much for joining me today. I really excited about today because I feel like I’ve got something that can really help you in your, just in your ability to see life through the right lens so that you are able to have a good result. The positive, not the negative, I’m so sick of the negative. I don’t know about you, but there’s so much negative around us. And it’s time for us to see things through God’s eyesight through positive eyes through joy and not sadness, to kind of flip the script today.

So I, I kind of wanted to ask you this question and say, Are you sick and tired yet? I mean, I don’t know what you’re dealing with. But are you sick and tired yet because I, I’m sick and tired of a lot of things. I don’t know about you, but I surely am. And whether that’s things going on in our world, whether that’s in politics, whether that’s personal things that we’re dealing with, in our own homes and our families and our relationships. And that might be finances, it might be someplace where the enemy has just chosen to attack and just constantly come at you. And I want to say Are you sick and tired yet? Because I think the answer to that question determines whether we stay in it. And it has still an ability to come after us. Whether we’re an open door for the enemy to attack or whether we’re ready to take the enemy out and to make progress. And to see breakthrough in our life.

I want you to have breakthrough. I want breakthrough. I want you to have breakthrough.

I want us to live in the breakthrough. Jesus is the one who made the way for us.

He’s already broken, what needs to be broken. But sometimes we just don’t see it. Sometimes we don’t realize that there are things right in front of us there. There are things that can be done right now. And sometimes we’re just blind. I empathize. Well, empathy is not the right word. I actually I guess I really compare myself many times and feel like I, I get I understand Paul, when he was blinded for for how long? Three days, I think it was until the scales fell from his eyes. But I so feel that way. And I’ll pray and say, God, I just don’t see I can’t see what I need to see, I feel blind in this area. And if you don’t remove the scales from my eyes, how am I going to be able to see. And so I want to give some help to us today. If you’re anywhere where you can grab your Bible and a pad of paper and some pencil or a pen or on your phone, whatever. Let’s take some notes. Let’s let’s look at some scripture today and dive into this question of Are you sick and tired. And I’m going to give us today two different passages of Scripture to people’s lives. And I’m going to show you the difference in their attitudes.

Attitude, you know, we say it attitude is everything, it changes everything, it really does. But there’s something kind of behind the attitude. These are attitudes we’re going to see. But because of these attitudes, they’re actually an attitude is born from a belief, I believe something so then my actions and my attitude toward it will then manifest I will make decisions because of that belief system. And we will make right or wrong choices based off of right or wrong beliefs. And so I’m going to address that today. And we’re going to look at the two passages. So you can write them down or put a marker on your Bible. The first one is John five, one through 15. And the second is Luke 843, to 48, John five, one through 15 and Luke eight, four to 48.

The first in John is the story of the man who was at the pool of Bethesda. And I’m going to read this, and I’m reading from the New King James Version. And we’re just going to kind of just keep an open mind, I want you to think about this man and what he might have been thinking or feeling. And you might even be surprised that you already you make some assumptions. We just make assumptions when we read these stories, or we have empathy for them in a particular way because we feel a kinship to them in that area. And so I’m going to start verse one. It says after this there was a feast of the Jews and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate, a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sins. If people blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water, for an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water, then whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was made well, and whatever of whatever disease he had, now a certain man was there who had an infirmity 38 years. Okay, he had an infirmity for 38 years, when Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been in that condition a long time.

So Jesus noticed something this man has been like this for a long time, he said to him, do you want to be made? Well, the sick man answered, Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool, when the water is stirred up. But while I am coming, another steps down before me. Jesus said to him, rise, take up your bed and walk. And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked in. I’m gonna go back and talk about that in a second. But I want you to just think about what you’ve heard. Let’s continue reading. And that day, that day was the Sabbath. The Jews therefore said to him, who was cured, it is the Sabbath, it is not lawful for you to carry your bed. He answered them, He who made me well said to me, take up your bed and walk. Then they asked him who is the man who said to you take up your bed and walk. But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn a multitude being in that place. Afterward, Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, See you have been made well, sin no more, lest a worst thing come upon you.

The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus, who had made him well. So he had been in this condition for 38 years, 38 years. Now, Jesus has said some things to him. And there are other scriptures that go along with that, that point to some things. But before we go there, before we dissect that, I want us to look at another person’s story that’s found in Luke eight, we’re gonna start in verse 43. This is the woman who had the issue of blood. Now a woman having the flow of blood for 12 years, who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any came from behind and touch the border of his garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped. And Jesus said, Who touched me, with all denied it, Peter, and those with him said, Master, the multitudes, throng and press you, and you say, Who touched me. But Jesus said, somebody touched me, for I perceived power going out from me. Now, when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared to him in the presence of all the people, the reason she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. And he said to her daughter, be of good cheer, your faith has made you well go in peace. She had suffered for 12 years.

So we have this man who suffered 38 years, and we have this woman who’s suffered for 12 years, this is a lot of suffering. And I’m sure that we can find ourselves feeling in some area. however long we have suffered with something about something dealing with something. But it feels like years, it feels too long. It’s this cumbersome thing that we just, we’re just so sick of it. We’re so sick of it. And I think the trap we can fall into so many times is you can get really sick of dealing with something. And because you’re sick of it, you can have a wrong thought about God. You can put down your faith, you can say God doesn’t answer prayer. You can you can think things because you think God didn’t do it the way you expected him to do it or in the timeframe that you expected him to do it. So, you know, the Scripture tells us that hope deferred makes the heart sick. And so many times we can think we’ve been hoping and waiting for this for so long, and we haven’t seen it. And because it’s been so long, we now lay down faith, we now no longer have expectation for God to do something for us. So I want you to just keep that in the back of your mind. I want us to now turn to First Kings 18 And I’m gonna read to you verse 21.

Because I found something very interesting, interesting in this one verse. It’s Then Elijah stood in front of them and said, and I’m reading out of the New Living Translation for those of you who want to know, how much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions. If the Lord is God, follow him. But if all are Baal is God, then follow him. But the people were completely silent. Now he is talking about, sometimes they’re doing what God wants and following God believing God, and sometimes they’re following false gods doing stuff that they shouldn’t be doing in that way. And he’s saying how long? Okay, we’re asking this question, how long? 38 years, 12 years? How long will you waver where one day you believe God and the next day you don’t? You know, we’ve I’ve used and quoted the Scripture so much that says that we cannot be double minded that a double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

There is a spirit of double mindedness that I think comes along, when we have been in something for a period of time. And I want to encourage you today because today is the day folks, today’s the day that we say no more. That’s it. I’m done. I’m done. I’m done dealing with this devil, I’m done dealing with this problem. I am done.

Now, I’m not talking about being done in your flesh, where you’re angry, and you treat people wrong, and you say hurtful things. I’m talking about being done. by the Spirit of God saying devil Enough is enough. I have gone this way too long. You know, the children of Israel were out in the wilderness. For 40 years, there was a point when God said, you have gone around this mountain long enough. It is time to go into your promise. I hope I am provoking you today. I hope that you are starting to say I am sick and tired of that. Yeah, I don’t want to deal with this anymore. Yeah, how can I get out of this? How can I change this? What can I do? I want to I want to stir you up. I want your faith to be provoked. I use that a lot. There’s a oh gosh, if you can just get the right motivation in you. Make sure you’re listening to the right stuff. Make sure you’re not filling your head full of negative toxic negative people negative.

Don’t agree with the devil stop agreeing with the devil. You You have to speak like you got to think right thoughts you have to take wrong thoughts captive. I think I’ve shared this with you all before. But that word to take a thought captive is the picture that goes with that is of a spear point where you have a long spear and a point at the end and you take it you take it captive by spearpoint you are forcing it because you have the weapon that will control that thing. You take that thought captive. And I want you to see this. There’s the 38 years, there’s 12 years, where do you find yourself? And I’m asking you the question, are you sick and tired? How long? Will you waver? I looked up that same Scripture because I read it to you in the New Living Translation. I looked it up in several different translations because I want you to hear this so many different ways that you that you really ask yourself this question today in the New King James that says How long will you falter? Now falter means you’re doing it wrong. You’re not doing this right? How long are you going to keep doing this wrong?

You know, it’s that old definition of saying of insanity doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. How long will you falter? How many years have to go by how much has to be lost? In the English Standard Version? It says How long will you go limping? Just limping through life. Not able to run, not able to do not being held back being slowed down. How long will you go on limping? In the King James Version, it says How long will you halt? How long will you be stuck? Will you will you stop before you reach the destination? How long will you put up with never reaching the goal? How long? In the Amplified it says How long will you hesitate? Like it’s right there. You’re gonna do it and then you back down.

You hesitate. You don’t go you know what’s the four way stop. You come to the stop sign and and you’re hesitating because there’s another car there and everybody’s playing the hesitate game and nobody’s going my husband can stay on that. And so he’ll be the one who goes he does not going to hesitate. How long will you hesitate? Let’s look at the man the pool besides that the man said, Jesus asks him now hear this. Jesus says, Do you want to be healed? Do you want to be whole? Do you want this? Okay? Jesus never said something for his own benefit. He is asking the man because he goes straight to the heart of the man. He’s going to the actual issue. Jesus knows what the issue is. And he’s asking him, do you want to be healed? Do you actually want to be healed? And the man’s response is not yes or no. This is the man’s response, which gives us insight into his thinking. He says, Sir, I have no one to put me in. So his attitude is of total self pity. He’s expecting somebody else to give him his healing. He’s expecting somebody else to put in the effort to get his healing. He is and he’s not only expecting them to do it, which means he’s not taking responsibility for his own life and his circumstance. But he is also in self pity poor me, I have no one. Okay, you cannot succeed, you cannot reach the goal you cannot attain and lay hold of what God has for you. If you live in self pity. If you refuse to accept that you are responsible for you, you are responsible to receive Christ in your life, you are responsible to do something with it, you’re responsible for your own spiritual growth, you are responsible. And you can’t say I didn’t have, you can’t say I was born in the wrong family. I was born in the wrong country. I was born to the wrong parents. I didn’t have a good circumstance. None of those things are our excuses.

Jesus can say to us and look us in the eye if we’re living in self pity and say, do you actually want to get healed? Or are you so used to the pity you receive from others and you like that, that you just continue to stay there because now you have a reason to not grow? Now you have a reason to stay in this condition and, and receive sympathy from others. That’s now your comfort zone. This is really critical folks. You really have to look at your own heart. And you have to allow God to examine us he have to allow him to ask questions of us. And let us answer those questions, honestly. Now, let’s look at the woman. The woman said she here she spent all her finances, she went to doctors this was not a woman who was lazy. This was not a woman who wanted to stay in this mess. She didn’t want to be sick. We know she wanted to be well. She just her problem was she was going to people she was she was hoping that by her efforts. You know in so many times we do this we go after friendships and relationships and friendships are good I don’t get me wrong I’m we need one another and that’s wonderful. But you cannot expect to get what God has from people. You’ll never get from people. What God unless God’s choosing to use them for your life. But you won’t be able to get what you truly need without Jesus. People aren’t enough. People aren’t enough. Even if you’re taking responsibility even if you are not living in self pity, even if you’re out there and you’re active. You’re you know, you’re a Martha and you’re a doer and you’re or you’re a Peter who runs and takes risks and you’re willing to go for it.

You have to understand you need Jesus, because you can spin your wheels and get nothing you can waste time and energy and still see no results. We need Jesus we need Jesus. In fact, I’ll give you a little shameless plug here. The reason we need Jesus I wrote a book you don’t need money, you just need God. You think you need money for everything? And God says, No, you don’t need money. If you need money, he’s still the source. He’s the one that tells us how to get it. But you may not even need money at all. What you do need is God to tell you what you need, where to be who, to who to meet, what, what to do, you need that. In fact, I’ll show it to you. You can get it on Amazon, you don’t need money. You just need God. Shameless plug over. So I want you to to see yourself. Are you in self pity? Or are you like this woman? This is what she said, Now hear her response, okay? If this is what she said to herself, if I can touch, the hem of His garment will be healed. Faith arose, this was no longer I’m going to try this doctor and that doctor and go to that person and spend my finances and my means and use everything I have available for me. Faith took over. And she said, I know that if I touch him, if I can get to him and touch him, I will be healed. So she took ownership. She didn’t defer. She didn’t show irresponsibility. She didn’t dwell in self pity. She said, No, this is my responsibility. And I’m gonna go get to Jesus.

In fact, she broke all the rules to get to him. She didn’t care what people thought she did what she was what people thought she shouldn’t do, she did. I mean, you might be one of those people. You might be saying, I’ve got to get to God, and I’ve got to get to church and your family and friends are saying you’re crazy. You go down there all the time to that church, you’re you’re a part of a cult. I mean, they’ll they’ll come against you. They’ll tell you what you’re doing is nuts. They’ll say not that’s not any good, or that they know, they think you’re worse. Now they’ll they’ll criticize you and say all kinds of things to you. And you know, I’ve got to get to Jesus, because if I get to Jesus, I will be made well. Let’s look at what Jesus said to her. His response to her was, when she well to the man, he said, Do you want to be made well, and I and then to her, he says, Who touched me. I love the difference. Jesus had to ask the man, he had to confront the man. But this woman he wanted to know because he wanted relationship with her. He wanted to let her know you did it right girl, you did it. Right. You came after me. And you did it. Right. Let’s look I want. Now, here is a really important just an important note that you need to think about Jesus. And this is important for our lives. Because if you’re that person who is dealing with self pity, because there’s a little bit of comfort and self pity, you know, it’s people come in, and they’ll tell you, they’re sorry. And you feel loved from them, you feel concerned for by them somehow that meets a personal need that’s inside of you.

And I want you to hear and I’m saying this and love please him because I want you free. I don’t want you to just feel loved because Jesus knows how to meet that need. And he knows how to bring the right people around you to give you all the love and encouragement you need to get out of that circumstances stay out of that circumstance to be truly delivered to walk in freedom. But let’s look at what Jesus did. Jesus had snuck away here the rulers in this of the synagogue and those who came wanted to criticize this man’s healing for one they’re criticizing him that he’s healed because he’s walking on the Sabbath. And now they want to find out who’s responsible for this because they want to go criticize that person to their high and lofty ways of of constantly acting like they know better they’re the ones who tell everybody what they should do you know these are the the know it alls coming to to declare if what you got was actually healing and and whether you should be doing it that way or not. And if you’re living right, and if you’re walking the way God wants you to walk according to their standards, their personal standards.

We don’t walk according to man standards. The scripture says that we are to walk out our salvation with fear and trembling, fear and trembling. That means that before God, you’re asking him, how do you want me to live?

You spent everything to save my life. Now, how do you expect me to live? I’m your servant God, how do you want me to walk this life out? How can I walk in obedience to you? That’s what we should be doing in fear and trembling. It says and I know that offends people, but I’m sorry Jesus said that He came not to make everybody feel all loose, nice and sweet. He came to bring a sword. He brings truth and truth cuts. And we need to know what the truth is. Now look what he does, he comes back and he finds the man that he healed later. And it says, Then Jesus confronts him about the his own healing that he did with him. And he tells him since you been made well, don’t sin anymore. He’s telling him don’t go back to the life you lived before. Now, if you get freedom, if Jesus doesn’t work in your life, he brings the warning. Don’t go live the way you lived before that old life. I’m now telling you is sin to You. It’s sin. If you go back, you’re falling into sin. If you go back to that old way of thinking into that old way of self pity, into that old way of expecting everybody else to do everything for you into that lazy life. You need to be doing something for the Lord. And I’m not talking about works works don’t save you.

I’m talking about obedience, living a life of obedience. We are to further the kingdom of God. And you need to find out for yourself what God is calling you to do. But that he says, Don’t you go back? If you go back, he tells him a worst thing will come upon you What is he referencing, there’s another scripture that tells us that when a man is set free from a demonic spirit, so Jesus is letting us know this man’s infirmity was actually a demonic stronghold in his life. And he’s the other scripture that tells us and I should have looked it up, I’m sorry, you can look it up. Just Google. What portions of this and it’ll pop up, you’ll find it. But he says that when a man is a body is delivered from a demonic spirit, that if that the demons will come back at another opportune time to find that that house is nice and clean, it’s been swept up, it’s all nice. And he’ll bring with him if you don’t fill that body. If you don’t fill that spirit with the Holy Spirit, they’ll come back and bring seven worst friends and the state the latter state of that man will be worse than the than the previous than the former, he you have a worse if you go back to that old self pity, if you go back into that perspective that you’ve been living in, under that thought life you’ve been living, if you go back into that, it will be worse, it will get worse for you. You think it was bad before it will get far worse. Let’s look at Matthew 12. Four.

In fact, I did write it down you guys look at that, okay, I’m gonna, I’m gonna give you the reference. And let’s look at it, Matthew 1243, to 45. And I’m gonna read it out of the New Living Translation. When an evil spirit leaves a person, it goes into the desert, seeking rest, but finding none, then it says I will return to the person I came from. So it returns and finds its former home empty, swept and in order, then the Spirit finds seven other spirits more evil than itself. And they all enter that person and live there. And so that person is worse off than before. That will be the experience of this evil generation. That’s, that’s really strong stuff right there. The number seven, when he says he’s going to bring seven more with him. That doesn’t mean literally seven. It’s the, the meaning behind seven to bring seven more wars. The number seven means completion, the enemy, he’ll bring so much more, he’s going to he’s he’s coming back to finish the job he started. So the enemy is looking to complete the destruction that he was doing in your life by you living in agreeing with him in that area. So he wants to rob you to kill you and to destroy you. I mean, he wants to finish you. That’s what that number seven means. So having an attitude of self pity and blame will destroy your life, you have to be willing to let it go. Whoever hurts you, you’ve got to forgive them, you’ve got to let it go. Whatever happened to you, you cannot continue to have power, let it have power over you. Because it will and if you hold on to it, it has control over you. It has the power over you.

Our flesh loves to be coddled, it loves to be stroked, we so easily fall into a pit of pity. Letting it go doesn’t mean that the person or whatever, whoever did something to you, or the thing that happened to you, whatever trauma you’ve experienced, it doesn’t mean that that is that those people are guiltless or that it had no meaning what happened to you that’s not what that means. But it does mean that if you will let it go and let God take it, then you are loosening its control over you. It doesn’t hurt another person for you to be angry with them. You to hold on to it. It doesn’t hurt them. It does nothing to them. It hurts you. It wounds you. So if you need to forgive, forgive, if you need to take ownership and be responsible, then do that. Take it decide that today you are sick and tired of it. You’re sick and tired of feeling what you feel you’re sick and tired of dealing with this. And you’re not going to allow it another day.

Let’s look then in comparison to the woman, so for 12 years, she relied on her own means and efforts or persistence on others. And Annette, she completely drained her. When you are trying to get something that only God can give from other people, it will drain you, it will leave you empty, and you will, you will feel such sorrow, because you will feel like I’m doing everything I need to do and it’s producing nothing. We need to go to Jesus, we need to go to Jesus. She says, though, if I can touch and I wanted to just plant this seed in your mind, right here, do you realize that she had in her thought process, she had to see that she had to see that if she could touch the hem of His garment, that she would be healed, she could see it. That’s what faith does. Faith says, I can see what God’s able to do, I can see it. If you’re reading the Word, you need to know that the word is infallible, it has to accomplish what it was set out to do. So you can have what God says you can have, if you will lay hold of it by faith, we need to do it by faith. So let’s look at these two differences. Self Pity, responsibility, faith versus sin. Jesus said to this woman, that she could go in peace, and that her faith made her well. Don’t you want that peace today? Don’t Don’t you want to say, not only was I sick and tired of it, but God was so good to me. He’s given me peace where I was troubled. He’s spoken to my storm and the waves have stopped crashing on this boat. God wants to bring a deliverance to you today.

He wants you free. And he will be he will speak to you. What needs to be spoken? If it’s a question that needs to be asked, ask the Lord to ask you the question that reveals in your spirit. This is kind of where we get I get to activate in you what to do the practical steps to take. Ask the Lord to ask you if there’s a question that needs to be asked, that will reveal what’s in your heart to reveal what the iniquity is to reveal what the infirmity really is? Is it really an infirmity in my body? Or is my heart sick? And causing my body to be sick? Is it my attitudes? Am I holding on to unforgiveness? What’s causing this in me, Lord, and let him tell you, and then receive your healing, but receive the healing with his instruction. Don’t go back. Don’t turn back. Don’t go back to the old ways and the things that he’s delivered you from. Don’t go back to the old habits. Don’t go back to the old ways of thinking, don’t go back to the old people. If it’s people that that that promote this in you do what you need to do to be well pick up your bed and walk. He’s telling you, you pick up your bed and walk.

These are our instructions, folks, we can get up from this place of self pity, and dealing with this stuff and say, “No more Satan, I’m not doing this another day, not today, Satan. And say, that’s it no more. I’m picking up my bed. I am walking away from here and I’m not going back that way anymore. I received the deliverance of the Lord today. I put away every thought that argues against the knowledge of God that that says that God is not only hasn’t already done it, but that he’s not able. I resist the enemy and he has to flee from me. I did this recently myself. I stood in one room, and I spoke to the enemy on something I was dealing with. And I said that’s it. I am not going to do this anymore.”

You are not having this. You’re not interfering here anymore. I am not allowing it. I said I’m standing up to you. And I’m not going anywhere. I’m not backing down. My little grandmother, she was only four foot 11 But boy, was she tough. And she would say you don’t ever show fear to the devil. You don’t ever show fear to the devil. And I’m just challenging you today. You stand up and you tell the devil That’s it. I’m not doing this anymore. And let’s receive our freedom and our victory and walk in obedience and the freedom that God gives us. and allow

His peace to come and overshadow us to walk in the knowledge you know where peace will come from. When you know that you believe that God’s actually doing it. He’s actually when you believe that, then you don’t look at what you see. Because faith doesn’t walk by what it can see, Faith doesn’t look at the natural realm. Faith doesn’t care what what happens in this natural is we walk by faith and not by sight. So I want you to I want you to take and lay hold of that today. I want you to to stand up to the devil, I want you to tell them no, I want you to pick up your bed and walk today. I want you to lay a hold of your freedom. And I want you to receive the peace of God that says go, you are free. Your faith has made you well. And God will help you to live in that freedom from this day forward, if you will submit yourself to Him. If you will do it his way and follow his instructions. There is nothing but blessing and freedom for your tomorrow. Thanks so much for joining me today. We’ll see you next time. Bye bye
