I have been mulling over something for a while now, and today I want to share it with you. What does it actually mean to live a blessed life? Not the world’s version of blessed, but the kind of blessed that Psalm 1 describes. I want us to slow down together and really sit with this, because I believe it will change how you approach your time with God.

What Job Taught Me About Trusting God’s Wisdom

Before we get to Psalm 1, I have to tell you about my own devotional time in the book of Job. It is one of the most powerful books in scripture, and it is also one of the hardest to fully grasp. We identify with Job because we know what it feels like to suffer, to be misunderstood, or to be falsely accused.

But what struck me most was how God responded to Job. God did not answer his questions. Instead, He revealed His own greatness, His creation, His power over things we cannot even comprehend. And Job’s response was humility. He realized he had been speaking about things far beyond his understanding.

That is where faith becomes real. I trust what God says about Himself is true, even when my circumstances do not make sense. Paul understood this so deeply that he could say to live is Christ and to die is gain. Nothing could shake him, because his life was not his own.

Are We Living in a Microwave Culture?

Here is something I cannot stop thinking about. We used to call our culture the microwave culture, because everything used to take time. A good meal took hours to cook. Now we want everything instantly, from our food to our answers to our worship.

We scroll and scroll, chasing dopamine hits, and we have become a society that needs constant stimulation just to feel normal. The problem is we are depleting ourselves. We are using up in a couple of years what was meant to last a lifetime.

This has crept into the church too. Our worship has become something we consume rather than something we wait in. We clap the moment a song ends instead of letting the presence of God settle in the room. We have forgotten how to let the Holy Spirit cook, the way a slow roasted meal needs time to become something worth remembering.

What Delights You? Defining the Blessed Man

Psalm 1 gives us a clear picture of what a blessed life actually looks like. It says blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, stand in the path of sinners, or sit in the seat of the scornful. Instead, his delight is in the law of the Lord, and he meditates on it day and night.

I want to ask you the same question I asked myself. What delights you? What makes you excited on the inside? A blessed man, according to God, loves His word and loves knowing Him. He lets that word marinate in him, wrestle with him, and do slow, deep work in him, even while he is at work, raising a family, or navigating hard situations.

The Progression From Walking to Standing to Sitting

There is a progression in this verse that I do not want you to miss. It starts with walking, just wandering and looking for direction. Then it moves to standing, where you become comfortable in the path of sinners. And finally it becomes sitting, where you park yourself there permanently.

Sin is deceptive, and choosing God’s way takes time. There is no quick fix, even though our culture wants to give us one. If you want a blessed life, it will not come the world’s way, but it is worth it.

The Fruit of a Life Planted by the River

When you are that blessed man, you become like a tree planted by the rivers of water. You are always flourishing, always full of life. You bring forth fruit in your season, your leaf does not wither, and whatever you do prospers. That is true prosperity. It comes from delighting in Him and letting His word transform you.

The Ungodly Are Not So

Psalm 1 does not stop there. It tells us the ungodly are like chaff, driven away by the wind. They will not stand in the judgment, nor will they be seated among the righteous. The Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly leads to nothing. It will not produce life.

A Prayer for a Hungry Heart

Let me pray for you.

Father, we just thank You for Your word. I do not know where I would be if I did not have Your word. Where would we be? Thank You for Your word, for Your wisdom, for sharing it with us, for teaching us. What if we were called to have faith with nothing to stand on, nothing to hold onto, no way to know who You are and what You think and what You feel and what You say? But You gave it to us.

Now we are without excuse because You have given us Your word. Father, I pray that You would put a hunger in every single person who hears this podcast, that they would hunger after You, desire You, crave You and Your attention, that they would spend time marinating in You, God, learning of You and loving You, meditating on You, knowing that it will produce beautiful fruit that does not wither and will not fade.

Lord, help us to truly be Your blessed people, that we will make the world jealous for the blessing that has come on our life because of the hunger we have had for You. Bless Your people today, Father. Bless Your word. Thank You for it.

And we will be so careful, God, to turn and give You all the glory, for all the glory is Yours. And it is in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
