In 1978, “The Who” released the title track “Who are you?” The song became even more famous when used as the theme song for the hit tv show CSI. During your life and even at your death everyone wants to know. Who are you? But not even you can answer this question when asked. You can state your name and the facts of your birth and the parents that bore you. You can list where you live and your education. That won’t answer who you are. The answer to this question has the power to change your life. In fact, the answer to this question will define your life and your death. It’s dramatically that important. But there is an even more imperative question.

In Matthew 16 Jesus looked at his disciples and asked, “Who do men say that I am? They gave Him several answers, but the consensus was that He was a prophet. So, Jesus replies, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter says without hesitation, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Stirred by Peter’s declaration Jesus says, “Blessed are you Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.” But here is the kicker. Jesus then says, “And I say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build My church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

You can’t know who you are until you know who He is. You may have a name given by your parents, but you won’t know what that ultimately means until Jesus defines it. His answer will give you your assignment. His answer will give you your purpose. His answer will equip you with all the backing of heaven to accomplish your destiny. It doesn’t matter who your parents or grandparents thought Jesus was. You have to answer this question yourself. 

So, “Who are you?”
